Readings

Mainline to the Heart and other poems

Clive's first book was published by Diane di Prima’s “Poets Press” – 1,000 copies were sold out in 1966-67 – now reissued along with significant uncollected pieces from the same period. These turbulent poems celebrate a place where emotion, sex and religion come together with overwhelming intensity. Is this trinity at the core of human experience, as Baudelaire suggests? Mainline to the Heart is an enormously powerful evocation of a state of mind most people barely know exists," states Jack Foley, and Steve Kowit calls the poems, "Naked paeans...the wailing, chaotic lyricism of youth sung in the key of compulsive sexual frenzy --an orgasmic, rapturous celebration of lust, drugs and life."

Regent Press is reissuing Clive's 1969 book Mainline to the Heart along with other significant poems of the same period. This 90-page edition presents the original, dramatic cover by Ross Perez in a large format, and provides a sense of the first book by including drawings by Erin Matson and a contemporaneous photo of the poet.

Chalcedony's First Ten Songs

Clive reads from Chalcedony's First Ten Songs. Chalcedony obsesses on sexual passion and its 10,000 variations. She doesn’t know anything else. And why should she? These poems are a vibrant call to body and spirit and earth through the sensory world. It’s as if Clive Matson expanded his voice and fully embraces sensual life in all its joys and pains.

Come share the experience and hear it for yourself.

“I don’t think I have ever read sexier poetry in my life! I love that the open mouths are not threatening now, but loving and erotic.” ~ E.E.

“I absolutely love Chalcedony. I really want to take my time with it, and read the poems again and again, it’s just beautiful.” ~ T.F.

“A sumptuous, radiant mouthful of poems, reminiscent of Pablo Neruda" ~ A.F.

"Chalcedony's here and she won't leave. She's in my closet trying on all my clothes." ~ C.S.
